Confined Space Refresher Training

The aim of this refresher course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how to correctly work in and around confined spaces. Following training; students will be able to identify the hazards associated with work in and around a confined space. Understanding of key legislation, duties of a standby person and understand the various categories of personal confined space entry and rescue equipment including their characteristics and limitations. Gas test atmospheres and working with permits is an integral part of this course. Students will also be required to carry out pre and post user inspections of all equipment. This course does not train or assess competency in breathing apparatus.

Duration: 1 Day (8 hours)

Student/Trainer Ratio: 10:1

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

This is a refresher course for participants who already hold the below units of competency. It is expected that a participant will have held the qualifications for a minimum of 12 months and no more than 3 years.
Participants must be able to present the Statement of Attainment for verification prior to course commencement. Please email your Statement of Attainment to training@heightsafety.net upon successful enrolment. Participants who cannot present evidence of previously held qualifications will not be able to participate in the course and will need to complete the initial 2 day course.
All students must be eligible to receive nationally recognised training within Australia and provide a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) upon enrolment.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for any persons who are required to perform any work or tasks where there is a requirement to enter and work in a confined space. This may include anyone from entry level to senior management. It is recommended that participants have year 10 level reading and writing capabilities. It is important to note that there are physical standards which relate to the level of performance required when undertaking accredited training. One requirement of the training package is that you are to be assessed as physically capable of working in confined spaces in a range of simulated and real locations. Students who are unable to satisfy the physical requirements of the course cannot be deemed competent or issued a Statement of Attainment, even if the qualification is a necessary part of their employment conditions.

  • Understanding of confined space legislation and standards
  • Definition of a confined space
  • How to perform risk assessments and control measures
  • Confined space permits
  • Atmospheric monitoring
  • Confined space entry equipment – Tripods, Davits, RPD’s, Personal winches, Retrieval SRL’s, spreader bars and full body harnesses
  • Demonstrate confined space entry, work positioning and rescue techniques

Qualifications for Successful Participants

Statement of Attainment in:
MSMPER200 – Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres
RIIRIS201D Conduct local risk control
RIIWHS202D Enter and work in confined spaces

Recognition of Prior Learning

Upon enrolment, you may wish to apply for recognition of prior learning and/or credit transfer. You may email a copy of certificates related to prior learning to training@heightsafety.net. Based on that evidence the course may be modified based on your previous knowledge. There is a currency requirement to be met in order to demonstrate current skills. The outcome of your application will be notified to you in writing within 14 days of initial application.

What do I bring?

All necessary equipment and learning materials will be provided. Light refreshments and lunch will also be provided for training completed at our training facilities. Please wear comfortable clothing and enclosed footwear.

Where can I train?

Training can be conducted in one of our dedicated state-of-the-art training facilities or be conducted on your site with the use of our mobile training simulators.

Assessments are made against units of competency.
