This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
Duration: 2 Days (16 hours) (8 hours pre-course learning and 8 hours face-to-face)
Student/Trainer Ratio: 10:1
Prerequisites & Entry Requirements
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Participants must have the physical abilities to perform CPR unassisted for 2 minutes on the floor. Participants who cannot perform unassisted CPR on the floor may be issued a Certificate of Attendance in lieu of the Statement of Attainment.
All students must be eligible to receive nationally recognised training within Australia and provide a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) upon enrolment.
Who should attend?
This First Aid course is nationally accredited providing participants with the qualification to be a First Aid representative in many workplaces and other required situations. The course we deliver is highly practical and focused on real life safety scenarios that you can put into practice.
It is recommended that participants have year 10 level reading and writing capabilities. It is important to note that there are physical standards which relate to the level of performance required when undertaking accredited training.
Students who are unable to satisfy the physical requirements of the course cannot be deemed competent or issued a Statement of Attainment, even if the qualification is a necessary part of their employment conditions.
Can overseas visitors complete this training course?
Yes!!
International students who hold a valid ‘Student Visa’ can enrol into this course without any interuption to their approved course of study or approved work limits. This doe not apply to all courses offered by Height Safety Engineers so please check the conditions for each course prior to enrolling.
International visitors who hold a Working Holiday Visa may be eligible to enrol into our courses once they arrive in Australia. This is important as some occupations in Australia will have legislative and/or licencing requirements relating to qualifications. International visitors will still be required to provide a valid USI (Unique Student Identifier) prior to enrolling into any Nationally Recognised Training. When registering for your USI number if you select Non-Australian Passport (with Australian Visa) as your form of ID, you will need to enter your Non-Australian passport number when creating your USI. The following details on the passport must match in order to verify in the USI registry system:
- Family Name
- Given Name(s)
- Date of Birth
- Passport Number
- Country of Passport
Students from New Zealand will not be able to create a USI using their New Zealand passport until your passport has been registered with the Australian Department of Immigration. This will only happen when the student crosses the border into Australia. Once the passport is registered with the Department of Immigration it can be verified and the student will be able to create a USI using their New Zealand passport.
If you are an International Visitor, you will need to provide a copy of your Visa and/or Passport by emailing training@heightsafety.net. Your Visa details will be verified for eligibility to participate in accredited training within Australia. If you are ineligible, a full refund of fees paid will be provided.
Course Objectives and Content
- Recognise an emergency and assess for hazards
- How to identify and minimise hazards to self and others
- Assess the casualty and recognise the need for CPR
- Seek assistance from emergency response services
- Perform CPR procedures
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in accordance with ARC guidelines
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
- Operate automated external defibrillator (AED) according to manufacturer s instructions
- Communicate details of the incident
- Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services
- Report details of incident to workplace supervisor as appropriate
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies.
- First aid procedures for bleeding, burns and fractures
- Managing medical conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma and seizures
- Managing medical emergencies such as snake/spider bites, poisons and choking
- Infection control procedures
- Managing exposure to extreme temperatures
- Administering first aid for eye & soft tissue injuries
- Assessing and moving sick & injured
- Legal responsibilities of a first aider
- Basic anatomy and physiology
- Choking
- Anaphylaxis treatment

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning and/or credit transfer is not offered for this course due to its high risk nature. It is also anticipated that all participants will be new entrants and/or refreshing knowledge and skills in this course of study.
